PlayStation VR, Sony’s virtual reality headset for the PS4, will launch in October at the suggested retail price of $399.99/£349.99/€399.99, Sony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Andrew House announced today on eve of GDC.
Originally announced two years ago at the 2014 Game Developers Conference under the codename Project Morpheus, PlayStation originally slated the VR headset for an early 2016 release date. “PlayStation VR represents a transformative experience in gaming, and we wanted to take the time needed to launch with a broad variety of content and a sufficient supply of hardware,” House explained on why it’s launching later than they initially hoped. “We are beyond excited to deliver to consumers the amazing experience that PS VR offers.”
Sony expects PlayStation VR to have more than 50 games available when it launches in October. That’s in addition to the 230 developers that are currently working on content. Additionally, The Playroom VR will be available for free and will include six games that will demonstrate PlayStation VR’s abilities.
