The games industry is in the middle of its traditional summer lull, so the PS4A team has had an unsurprisingly quiet week, during which we pretty much played the same games as the last few PlayTimes, like Batman: Arkham Knight, Destiny and Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward.
This week I spent all my time in Destiny. Now that I’m past Level 20, it is all about gaining those extra-special pieces of armour and weaponry that will elevate me to the next level. And I desperately need it. Multiplayer can be really tough when everyone else is already Level 34. And many of the cool Strikes are still out of my reach. As a result, the grind has begun. In South Park terms, the Dreg is my boar – I spend ages running through low-level patrols, killing them in droves to compete bounties for Future War Cult. It’ll get fun again soon, once I level up enough to get to the meaty Strikes, but for now it is definitely a grind. I’m still enjoying it though.
I’ve played a few games this week, but I haven’t actually played as much as I would usually. It’s been a mix of Rocket League, Batman: Arkham Knight, Hatsune Miku Project Diva f 2nd and Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess. I wasn’t excited for Rocket League when it was announced for PS+, but now I’ve tried it, I can say that it’s ridiculously fun and one of the most enjoyable multiplayer experiences available right now. If you’re on the fence about it, gather some friends and give it a go! I also got the DLC song pack for Hatsune Miku, adding 16 songs, which I’ve been enjoying; it’s a shame that there are no more songs planned, as Japan got another 16 songs too. Hopefully a Project Diva f 3rd is in the works! Meanwhile, Batman is still very Batman. I’m finding the Batmobile to be quite enjoyable, although it feels like Rocksteady force you to use it regularly, which can become pretty tiring. I don’t think it’ll land in my top ten this year, as it’s not really gripping me, though I’m enjoying it all the same.
Pretty much the only game I played to any great extent this week was Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward; shocking, I know. I finally completed the main scenario, and (like Dolph in Destiny) am currently in the process of grinding for better gear, before I start the end-game content. I’m sure everyone’s bored to tears with me talking about how awesome FFXIV is, so from now on just assume it’s awesome until I say otherwise. In other news, I upgraded my PS4 to a 2TB HDD, which was a remarkably painless experience that I’d recommend to all PS4 owners. Far less simple is the process of re-installing/downloading all of my games, but I guess you can’t have it all.
